Position Overview

Our teachers must believe wholeheartedly that all students have the inherent ability to succeed. Moreover, they must be committed towards ensuring the school is a place where students, staff, and the community want to be in order to work collectively towards our mission and vision.

The Education Specialistwill be an integral member of the educational leadership team. S/he will demonstrate a belief that all students can learn at high levels. S/he will develop related goals, objectives and recommend policies, planning, implementation and working with school staff to meet the needs of students with special needs. S/he will serve as a resource for information regarding special education services, programs and policies and will ensure that procedures are appropriate in relation to policies required by region, district, state and federal regulatory requirements. The Education Specialist will be involved in program management duties, and will work with the school principal and administrative team to analyze data, plan activities, monitor programs/services, respond to others, and consult with teachers and administrative staff.

Ultimately, our goal is that EVERY student will one day receive a college scholarship, earn a degree, and give back to their community.

Our founders, former California Senator Gloria Romero and charter school developer Jason Watts, saw an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of students and families in underserved communities by laying the foundation for students to succeed in college and career.

Their goal was to create not only a fun and engaging atmosphere for students and staff, but also a collegiate-inspired environment that will motivate underserved and foster youth students to attend school and excel. Each classroom will not be identified by number. Rather, students will be in UCLA, Harvard, Stanford, etc, further establishing a "college feel".

Our campus opened in August of 2016 and serves approximately 300-400 transitional kindergarten through eighth grade students and families.

Scholarship Prep will provide an enthusiastic and supportive environment for our staff, including dynamic leadership and professional development embedded within our work calendar.

Scholarship Prep’s instructional program is based on the tenets of academic rigor, student engagement, innovation, and creativity. As a Project-Based Learning (PBL) modeled school, Scholarship Prep teachers will mix learning technologies and interactions resulting in a socially supportive, constructive learning experience. We will utilize digital content and instructional technology to create a unique classroom environment, which will allow students to grow as independent learners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Know current Special Education regulations and best practices
• Support general education teachers and administrators to implement appropriate strategies to meet the needs of student with IEPs
• Implement accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in the general education classroom and during Special Education service time
• Analyze assessment results to drive instruction and IEP development
• Develop and assist with appropriate behavior management techniques for students with special needs
• Develop IEPs in accordance with federal, state and SELPA standards
• Create and maintain Special Education documentation as required by federal, state, and SELPA regulations
• Ensure IEP timeline compliance of assigned caseload
• Develop positive relationships with parents and families to engage them in the IEP process
• Manage and/or assist with the development of 504 plans at assigned sites
• Work with administration to develop and provide ongoing professional development for general and special education staff and administrators

Requirements:

• Prior special education/resource teacher experience preferred
• Experience with Inclusion and/or Universal Design of Learning preferred
• Bachelors Degree required
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
• Expertise in classroom management strategies and the ability to articulate these effective strategies to peers and direct reports
• Prior experience using data systems such as AERIES and/or SEIS
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of special education laws and regulations, general education curriculum, alternative dispute methods and techniques, disabilities and appropriate curriculum, behavior management systems
• Demonstrated success teaching students from educationally under-served areas
• Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills
• Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple constituencies
• Detail-oriented team player
