Concord police investigate fake GoFundMe account opened after crash that killed high school seniors
Police are investigating an apparent fraud involving an online fundraiser created after a Florida crash that killed three high school seniors from Massachusetts, a spokesperson confirmed Monday. Jimmy McIntosh, Hannah Wasserman and Maisey O'Donnell, all 18-year-old Concord-Carlisle High School students, were killed last week in a crash involving a tractor-trailer in the Florida Panhandle. A fourth student was critically injured. The four 18-year-olds were in an SUV traveling westbound when a tractor-trailer performed a U-turn in the paved median of the highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The SUV in which the 18-year-olds were traveling collided with the trailer, then moved across the median and both eastbound lanes before coming to a rest off the south side of the highway.Following the identification of the victims, an apparent fake GoFundMe account was opened in Wasserman's name. It was pulled by the company on Wednesday, after accumulating more than $8,000 in pledged donations. At the time, a spokesperson for GoFundMe told NewsCenter 5 that donations were paused while they sought "more information" from the organizer. The company said the donations would be held by the payment processor and would not be released until the beneficiary's personal information is verified. A GoFundMe spokesperson later released a statement regarding the fraudulent fundraiser: “Our hearts go out to the community after this tragedy. At GoFundMe, being a safe and trusted place to give and receive help is our top priority and we are continuing to monitor the platform for any fundraisers related to this incident," the spokesperson wrote. "When there’s an unspeakable tragedy, people have a deep urge to help and provide comfort to those affected - it’s not uncommon for someone to create a GoFundMe to help another individual after a news report. All funds remained safely held by our payment processors during our review process to help ensure funds were safely delivered to the family, at no point did the organizer have access to the funds. As our Trust & Safety team did not receive a response to our outreach, all donors have been refunded and the fundraiser removed.”
