Widely regarded as one of the best movies of all time, and definitely one of the top releases of the past decade, Mad Max: Fury Road followed Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Theron’s Imperator Furiosa became the highlight of the film, so it was no surprise when director George Miller announced that a Furiosa prequel was in the works. In fact, Furiosa’s backstory was already fully-developed by the time filming on Mad Max: Fury Road had begun. Born out of necessity, Miller and his co-writers came up with an extensive storyline to help that cast and crew understand the stakes of the story.
“So we had the screenplay virtually complete before we shot Fury Road, and we did it because it arose out of wanting to explain to everybody who Furiosa was—to Charlize when she took on the role, and to all the actors and the designers and everybody else working on the Citadel and so on,” Miller told The A.V. Clubin 2022. “The feeling was, gee, this is a pretty good screenplay, and then I kept saying to myself, ‘if Fury Road works, I’d really like to tell this story.’”

What is Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagaabout?
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga takes place years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road and chronicles Furiosa’s life leading up to the Citadel. It follows her time at the Green Place of Many Mothers, her unwilling journey with a biker gang helmed by the warlord Dementus, and her experience as Dementus and the Immortan Joe fight for dominance at the Citadel. According to a Deadline interview with Miller,the story is spread over 15 years, “so, it’s a saga.”

Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Furiosa. Taylor-Joy has skyrocketed to fame since her film debut in Robert Eggers’ The Witch (2015). Since then, she has starred in Split (2016), Glass (2019), Emma (2020), Last Night in Soho (2021), The Northman (2022) and The Menu (2022), among other movies. She won several awards for work in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit (2021).
Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth stars as Dementus. Hemsworth gained international fame for his work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). As Thor, he was one of the original Avengers and starred in The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Tom Burke
After Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had to drop out of Furiosa due to scheduling issues, Tom Burke was cast as his replacement in the role ofPraetorian Jack. Burke is best known for his TV work in The Musketeers (2014-2016), Strike (2017-present) and The Lazarus Project (2022-present). He also starred in Mank (2022).
Nathan Jones
Nathan Jones reprises his Mad Max: Fury Road role as Rictus Erectus. He has also been seen in Mortal Kombat (2021).
Angus Sampson
Angus Sampson also returns to his Mad Max: Fury Road character, the Organic Mechanic, in Furiosa. He has also appeared in The Lincoln Lawyer (2022-present) TV series.
Quaden Bayles
After appearing in Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022), Quaden Bayles was cast inFuriosa in an undisclosed role.
Lachy Hulme
The Australian actor who appeared in several Matrixmovies as well as Three Thousand Years of Longingwill be taking over the mantel of Fury Road's antagonist Immortan Joe. The role was previously played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, but the switched to a younger actor for the prequel.

Will Charlize Theron be in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?
Charlize Theron will not appear in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Although surprise cameos are always possible (looking at you, Fast X), Theron has spoken about handing over the reins to Taylor-Joy for the prequel. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,she praised Taylor-Joy and referred to her as “one of the greatest [expletive] actresses.”
